Course in Lighting Design and Application 2018 - BOOKINGS OPEN!

The SA Chapter is seeking enrolments for the next intake of Lighting Education offered by the  IESANZ, Course in Lighting Design and Application (CLDA) to be run in early February 2018.  This two year course will inform, instruct and train students in the nature of light and vision, how light is measured, described and the principles employed in lighting and its appropriate design.


The course consists of 120 contact hours for each year, 240 hours being required in total for a Statement of Attainment and attendees must complete all six (6) core units of competency and one(1) elective unit.  This course comprises attendance of lectures, assignments, tutorials and assessments.


The Course outline:

Lectures will be conducted over 38 weeks (Year 1) and 37 weeks (Year 2) on Tuesday evenings from 6.00 p.m. – 8.30 p.m. commencing 6th February at Express Training Connections, Edments Building, Level 5, 38 Gawler Place, Adelaide (just off Rundle Mall). There is ample parking in close proximity to the venue.


The units of competency include: 

  • Apply the principles of light and vision in lighting design
  • Integrate colour into lighting design
  • Perform photometric measurements and calculations in lighting design.
  • Evaluate lamps and luminaires for lighting design
  • Design lighting solutions for built and natural environments and
  • Communicate information on lighting design


One of two electives will also be offered in Year 2:

  • Maintain and enhance professional practice, or
  • Incorporate lighting controls in lighting design.


Upon completion of the full Course the student is eligible for membership of IES: The Lighting Society as Technician, TechIES.  During the 2 year course students are encouraged to attend the monthly IESANZ technical meetings arranged by the SA Chapter.


Who should take this course?

Anyone that plans, evaluates, makes decisions or offers advice on lighting and its appropriate use should undertake this course.  If you can place yourself within this situation and wish to be more knowledgeable about light and lighting then this course has been created specifically with you in mind.


Course Fees

The course cost is $3,500 (including GST) per year with a $500 non-refundable deposit required at the time of registration and this will include an Associate membership of IESANZ Ltd.  Cancellations will not be accepted after 1st January, 2018.
