In August this year, the ACT branch of the IES was lucky to secure the internationally renowned lighting designer and educator Kit Cuttle for a presentation on his philosophies on lighting design. A group of over 40 attendees were treated to a fascinating seminar, where Kit presented his ideas that challenge some of the deeply ingrained lighting practices in our industry.

His seminar, entitled ‘Re-thinking Lighting’ introduced his idea of ‘Perceived Adequacy of Illuminance’ as a measure of the quality of a lighting design, rather than the (arguably arbitrary) horizontal illuminance metrics that are so often relied upon. The audience was both interested and challenged by Kit’s ideas, which gave everyone something to think about for future designs.
